January 2010 Newsletter

The Commanders Message

By Barry Preston

Happy New year to everyone.  We are continuing to get new post members and I hope this trend doesn't change.  I'm looking forward to more new challenges in the new year; my hope is that we can all work together as a team.  Remodeling the Warrior Room into a war museum is one challenge that I'm excited about.  We need donations to make this a reality, so any contributions will be greatly appreciated.  The war museum will be open to the public and to schools; it will be a place that will set our post apart from other posts.  Tax deductible checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 351003, Palm Coast, FL, 32135 or can be dropped off at the post.

The annual awards dinner for Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen winners will be held at Port Orange on January 9th, at 5:30p.  See me if you want tickets. Our post had one Patriot's Pen winner and two Voice of Democracy winners at the district level!

If you any have ideas, suggestions for the good of the post, please leave them (with your name) in my box; all constructive suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Stop Loss Special Pay

from one of our Iraqi Vets

The Defense Department plans to provide retroactive stop loss special pay to active, reserve and former service members who had their enlistment extended or retirement suspended due to stop loss are eligible for this special pay, if they served on active duty between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009.

Service members may begin submitting their claim for retroactive stop loss special pay on Oct. 21, 2009.  In accordance with the 2009 Supplemental Appropriations Act, all applications must be submitted to the respective services no later than Oct. 21, 2010.  Eligible personnel will receive a payment of $500 per month for each month (or any portion of a month) that a member was retained on active duty due to stop loss.  Applicants for retroactive pay who are no longer in the military had to be honorably discharged, and for those who were Stop Lossed in fiscal 2009, may only receive payment from one stop loss authority – either the money appropriated for stop loss special pay in the Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009, or the money allocated for retroactive stop loss special pay in the 2009 Supplemental Appropriations Act, but not both.

Service members must provide documented proof they were Stop Lossed with their claim.  Family members of deceased service members should contact the appropriate military service for assistance in filing their claim.

Information on how to contact each of the services is listed below:

DUTY OFFICER  for January

The following is the list of scheduled Duty Officers for the month of January.  The closing of the Post is an important responsibility for our security and the safety of our bartenders.  It’s not hard to do, but it MUST be done.  If you have any questions or are not sure as to what to do, ask someone and we’ll walk you through it.  If your scheduled time conflicts with some other activity, please let Cmdr. Barry Preston (445-2741) know ahead of time or switch with someone else.  If you’re not on the list, but could spare one night a month, again, please call Barry.

NEED NEWSLETTER HELPER

Each month I print 675-700 Newsletters.  They come off the printing machine at about 7 Newsletters a minute.  I can do the first fold (11x17 to 8½ x11) as fast as they are delivered.  What I need is someone sitting next to me to do the second fold (8½ x11 to 5½ x 8½) at the same rate and the whole thing is finished, waiting for the team that does the tabs and labels.  I almost always print on the last Sunday afternoon of the month.  Printing takes about two hours and I usually start about 12:30 / 1:00.  Anyone?  Give me a call or see me.  Thanks!
